Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. Hi Carolyn:. You could in fact say that Office will work “only” with TrueType fonts. OS X needs to pass the fonts to Mac Office, and that happens only at boot-up.
Old “Mac” fonts can’t be used. Word sorts its font menu by the internal name coded in the font: if that’s wrong or absent, the fonts can end up right down the bottom of the list. I strongly suggest that you enable ALL your fonts and leave them that way. Fonts “enabling” and “disabling” as you switch applications is a recipe for “interesting times” in Mac Office. I also suggest that you define styles containing the fonts. That way, you will never have to look at the stupid font menu again.
It is very slightly quicker to customise the built-in styles than to create your own styles, but the difference is only a couple of clicks.
Once you have defined the fonts you want into styles, check the “Add to Template” box that appears on the Modify Style dialog. That writes the new styles back to your template, so they will be available forever more, and you will never have to find those fonts again.
When you are defining styles, the font list you see shows every font on the computer, it is not using the Word font list. In addition to John’s reply, you may want to search the forum using a criteria such as ipa. In reply to John McGhie’s post on January 27, Thanks for the detailed answer to my question.
I probably didn’t explain the problem clearly enough, and in case you’re willing to spend any more time on this, I’ll try again. But they seem to do nothing.
For one thing, when I open a file created on my Windows machine and saved using the option of embedding characters used in the document , the IPA characters aren’t recognized. It’s the same grid that appears under “normal” font. I have the feeling that I need to somehow “activate” the fonts that I’ve installed, but I don’t know how.
I have of course quit Windows, also restarted the machine, to no avail. Fortunately, I still have a working Windows machine, but I’d like to have access to these characters on the Mac too.
